Issaquena County is located in the Delta Region of Mississippi on the banks of the Mississippi River. Issaquena County was formed on January 23, 1844 and was named by using the indian word meaning "Deer River." Issaquena is the least populated county in Mississippi.

The county seat is Mayersville, named for David Mayer on whose plantation Mayersville was built. Other Issaquena County communities include: Fitler, Grace, and Valley Park. In it's first census in 1850 there were 4,478 residents listed. In the last federal census in 2000 the population was 2,274.
